Default Home Network

I have 2 computers at home both running XP SP2. One plugs directly into my
Netgear router and the other is wireless. I recently bought a laptop withe
Vista Home Premium. I was able to connect to the network before, but I think
I accident;y changed something. It is now showing my network as a public
network. It continually says "Identifying...(Public Network)" in the Network
and Sharing Center. Access is Limited connectivity. Also I am NOT able to
access the Customize link in the NaS Center like I was before. It isn't
there anymore.

Any help?

No, I cannot,I do not have the Customize option. Unless there is another way
to change it.

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.
How to give Permissions are there, too.
If you are running Norton, etc’s Firewall, check its settings.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard.

That's a good article. It answer all but 1 question. Thanks for the link.

My one problem is that Instead of telling me it is an unidentified network,
it says that it identifying...(public network) and the Customize link wont
show up to let me change it to private. It is gone since it is identifying.
i have left it for hours and it wont identify or quit out on its own.

If you don't have Customize option to change the public network to private
network, it could be the 3rd party software or you need to add administrator
to the local services. This link have many cases that may help. Please post
back with the result.

Can you tell me did you manage to sort this as I think I may have the
same problem, I cannot change from public to private as my customize
link is missing.
