Default Vista wired LAN problem

I am trying to connect my new Vista Home PC with my work XP PC in order to
share some files and a USB modem connected internet link (on the Vista PC).

I am using an ethernet to ethernet cable which has previously worked with my
old XP PC and the same work PC. For some reason, I cannot get my Vista PC to
allocate any IP addresses (you can tell I'm not very good with network
settings...). I don't have a router to use as a DNS, the PCs have been in the
same workgroup but it made no difference. I can ping localhost on the Vista
PC.

There is no nice wizard to set up a wired connection on Vista, just
wireless, dialup, VPN or connect to the internet. Grrrrrr.

Any ideas ?

Default Vista wired LAN problem

We have many issues with this TCP/IP configuration.

1. Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.85.124(Preferred).
2. The Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
3. The IPv6 could be the problem too.

Default Vista wired LAN problem

Thanks for your reply, but what do I need to do about these issues ? Do I
need to give a hard-coded IP address for IPv4 (192.168.0.1 ?) and disable
IPv6, or is there another set of steps I need to take ?

I am trying to connect my new Vista Home PC with my work XP PC in order
to
share some files and a USB modem connected internet link (on the Vista
PC).

I am using an ethernet to ethernet cable which has previously worked
with
my
old XP PC and the same work PC. For some reason, I cannot get my Vista
PC
to
allocate any IP addresses (you can tell I'm not very good with network
settings...). I don't have a router to use as a DNS, the PCs have been
in
the
same workgroup but it made no difference. I can ping localhost on the
Vista
PC.

There is no nice wizard to set up a wired connection on Vista, just
wireless, dialup, VPN or connect to the internet. Grrrrrr.

Any ideas ?

Default Vista wired LAN problem

Try to disable IPv6 and you may want to install latest firmware for the
router and driver for the NIC. Or check this search result.

Thanks for your reply, but what do I need to do about these issues ? Do I
need to give a hard-coded IP address for IPv4 (192.168.0.1 ?) and disable
IPv6, or is there another set of steps I need to take ?

3. The IPv6 could be the problem too.

and on the work PC (havng released the work lease):

I can't put all of the info as you could identify some network details
which
would get me sacked, but basically it has a Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx
Gigabit
Controller with DHCP enabled, Autoconfiguration Enabled as No, IP and
subnet
masks as 0.0.0.0 with a DHCP server as 255.255.255.255. There is also a
wireless card in this device which is disabled and there disconnected.

I don't have a wireless card in the Vista PC or my internet ADSL
connection.

Posting the results of ipconfig /all on both computers may help.
