Hey all, For some strange reason my disk defragmenter has stopped working! I run it as usual from the start menu, it requests permission to continue, which I give, and then nothing happens! I've done a search and several others seem to have this problem as well, but no one's provided a sollution! Please help! -- leon88 |

It will not show what it has done/is doing. It just does it.. -- Mike Hall - MVP http://msmvps.com/blogs/mikehall/default.aspx |

Hey guys, thanks for the replies! brummyfan I'll probably try that, but it just sucks that this isn't working, plus the computers not even 5 months old and it's acting up! It doesn't show what it does but all the while there's been a little window that pops up and provides the option to start defraging now, that window doesn't appear anymore! Sigh.. -- leon88 |

Why is it that I can't see that it's working? I'd rather be able to see it
running than hope it gets finished - and it never seems to. JMHO Kathy "Mike Hall - MVP" wrote in message ... "leon88" wrote in message ... It just does it.. -- Mike Hall - MVP http://msmvps.com/blogs/mikehall/default.aspx Defrag never really finishes because files are being manipulated constantly by the user. This can be seen by the fact that, having defragged one time, going back to defrag a week later shows that fragmenting has occurred yet again. So, rather than have the user decide on a defrag routine, Vista does it all in the background, requiring no intervention from the user. In this way, the hard drive is kept in good condition constantly instead of every now and again when the user decides that performance is being affected by fragmentation. -- Mike Hall - MVP http://msmvps.com/blogs/mikehall/default.aspx |

Even so, the disk defragmentation program used to run in an active window. I'm having the same problem, and I even check my processes to see if it could be running, but it isn't. I also started cmd.exe as an administrator and attempted to run defrag.exe with arguments to defragment files in all volumes, defragment whole files regardless of size, forces the defragmenter if remaining space was low, and to run verbose mode, which is meant to give the user a detailed analysis. Nothing happened. If someone else having the problem would like to give it a go and see if it works, just search for cmd.exe from Windows Explorer, right-click it and select Run as Administrator, and then type "defrag -c -w -f -v" and press enter. Otherwise, Vista's defragmenter is not working in either the foreground or background. -- Messor |
