I've reviewed a number of threads on this or very similar topics over the
past two weeks on a number of sites but I'm not 100% confident I have a solid answer for my questions. I apologize if this is repetitive. I recently purchased an HP Pavilion a6300f that has the HP 32 bit version of Vista Home Professional installed. I’ve upgraded memory to 4GB and have added a decent NVIADA Chipset based video card to overcome the 128mb limitation of the onboard NVIDA 7300 630i that was provided as part of the original purchase. All are working fine, the Vista Home Professional 32 bit O/S has been successfully activated and Windows Upgrade Advisor implies moving to Ultimate 64 shouldn’t be a problem. As an afterthought I picked up a Windows Vista Ultimate upgrade (one of the major resellers is going out of business so I picked up the Signature Version of the Vista Ultimate Upgrade at a reasonable cost). I’d like to upgrade from the Vista Home Premium OEM 32 bit version to the 64 Bit Vista Ultimate version now (I do have 64 bit capable software I use, have been in the IT profession for a number of years and I know that this will eventually require a “Clean” install). Had I read the posts on this and other forums prior to acquiring the upgrade, I would have gone another route and if the reseller that is going out of business would refund the purchase price for the upgrade or apply this towards a “full” version - I’d probably go this route - they will not do so). My question is it possible to get from my current Home Professional configuration to Vista Ultimate 64 version and what is the best way to do so with what I‘ve purchased? I’m not concerned with preserving data (I‘ve held off loading anything but some base applications that can be easily reloaded), have verified all the 64 bit drivers I need are available so I simply need some guidance on: 1.) Is this possible without purchasing another copy of Vista? 2.) What is the most effective method of doing this? I’ve seen some posts stating that I may be able to first upgrade to Ultimate 32 and then load / install Ultimate 64 (leaving out the activation key for Ultimate 64 until it is successfully installed and then activate online or via the phone). I thought it was worth a try to verify this before starting. Thanks for your help… |

I know the way you are talking about.
Install the upgrade leaving out the Product Key first time around. It won't work with your Upgrade disk. It is NOT 32bit compatible! Vista 32bit to 64bit, or 64bit to 32bit is done by a full, clean install. Thanks Mick - I understand that a clean install will be required to go to
Ultimate 64. I do not understand how the product autentication process works for Ultimate 64. I currently have a genuine authenticated version of Vista Home Premium 32 installed (albeit an OEM version that came with the computer). In researching options to use the Ultimate upgrade I purchased (which comes with both the 32 and 64 bit DVD media) - there appears to be some issues with the 64 bit installation since upgrading from a 32 bit version to a 64 bit version does require a clean install. I have both the Premium OEM and Ultimate activation keys but since a clean install is required to go to Ultimate 64 I do not know this will do me any good. I may be a victim of Caveat Emptor - I did not do my research before I purchased the Ultimate upgrade so I am trying to find a work around if one exists. AFAIK your computer is not capable of running a 64 Bit OS since it has a
dual core Pentium and does not have a Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD 64 CPU. "WMP" wrote in message ... Thanks Mick - I understand that a clean install will be required to go to Ultimate 64.
