I have had 2 XP desktops networked together fthru a linksys befw 11s4 for
quite some time and had no issues. I just got a laptop with Vista and am having lots of problems. The Upstairs PC and basement PC can see each others shared folders however the laptop can not see or be seen. I am posting ipcong and browstat info for all you experts. I did it from the upstairs PC. Can you ping 192.168.1.1? Also check the firewall.

I am a brand new user of Vista and certainly not an "expert" on the system. Nor am I in any way connected to "Network Magic". That said, here is what happened to me. Two computers running XP, one wired through a router to the internet and one wireless. Both worked fine. Bought new laptop with Vista. Could not get Vista and XP machines to file or printer share. Had already added LLTD to the XP machine; still wouldn't work (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en) Computer store owner no help; says that it's almost impossible to get the two systems to work together. Started reading old messages in microsoft.public.windows.vista.general and found one from last Nov. that mentioned "Network Magic". Program has free 7 day trial so I tried it. Within five minutes it had diagnosed that Window Internet Connection Sharing had to be turned of in Vista; did it, and had me sharing files and a printer. So, if your are having problems, give it a try. It's free, it works and you don't need to keep it installed after you get set up. http://www.networkmagic.com/ On Mon, 11 Feb 2008 05:43:00 -0800, Brian wrote: I have had 2 XP desktops networked together fthru a linksys befw 11s4 for quite some time and had no issues. Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing. How to give Permissions are there, too. If you are running Norton, Trend Micro, McAfee, etc’s Firewall, check its settings to make sure it allows file and printer sharing.. 1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is the SAME. In Vista Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers) Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc) File Sharing: ON Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared Docs) Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer. Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard. "Brian" wrote: I have had 2 XP desktops networked together fthru a linksys befw 11s4 for quite some time and had no issues.
