Thanks, Yes I do password protect and I do use a password protected account
but I have other reasons for hiding them, one if some body is just looking
even if they where able to see hidden files and folders they would have to
know where to look for the folders and that would take them time, and upto
now it has not been a problem.

BUT! using "show hidden files and folders" to keep other from viewing your
documents is about the most insecure thing you could do.

You can password protect your Office files from within word or Excel if you
dont want others to see them. As far as your pictures and plans at least!
store them under your user name and password portect your account (wont be
100% secure but better then what your doing). Any files/folders you want
Guests or other accounts to have access to put them in the Public Documents
folder.

The best way to secure your files/folders is to use a encryption program.

Hmmm, don't see any policies that would affect hidden files.

For curiosity's sake, see if the problem still exists in Safe Mode or when
logged on as a different user.

The only other troubleshooting option I know of is auditing the registry key
& that will generate a lot of data to sort thru.

Search help & support for 'auditing' and read the topic named 'Monitor
attempts to access and change settings on your computer'

Typed Auditing, I have two options, 1. Windows security information for IT
Pros, 2 What information appears in event logs? (Event Viewer).

back up problem, but the hidden file problem started before
this,

said I have tried all the system restores none of which cure
this
problem
with not being able to view hidden files.

and Folder problem, I have got round the problem by reinstalling Windows and
everything is working fine now.

Keith just checked the HKEY and this is what I have found,

First when the tick box for Do Not Show Hidden Files or Folders

Hidden = 2
ShowSuperHidden = 0
Superhidden = 0

second when the tick box for Show Hidden Files and Folders

Hidden = 1
ShowSuper Hidden = 0
Superhidden = 0

So still do not know what the problem was, I have reinstalled all the
programs as before and all my files and folders, and every thing is working
fine.

folder.

I have run every type of Anti virus, Malware, Spyware program, I have

all the system restores. the only other thing I can think of is running

recovery program.

But any other ideas before I go for that.

followed the instructions, the icons in the Control panel disappear
briefly
when I click Apply but when I go to the folder where I know there
are
hidden
files there is nothing, If I copy this folder to an external hard
drive
and
then connect it to another computer I can view the files.
