Hi people,
In Windows XP we can create metadata for all type of file (right click on a file then properties\summary) but when you transfer a file from XP to Vista all those metadata are been deleted ! so how can we keep it ? (and edit them under vista) Thx a lot |

Metadata is stored by the file system, not with the file. As such it cannot
be transferred between systems. -- Richard G. Harper [MVP Shell/User] * NEW! You will find the information under the "Details" tab instead of a "Summary'
tab. Also, you have to use the NTFS in order to keep the meta data. If you copy onto a fat32, or other none NTFS location, the meta data does not copy over. "Max" wrote in message ... "Metadata is stored by the file system, not with the file. As such it

Ho ok ![]() but when I read a file (how hosted on a XP machine) with another XP machine I can access to the NTFS metadata anyways, there are a way to enable this in vista ? Yeah, of course the target folder is also in NTFS format, so "normally" Its keep the metadata but with Vista no ![]() ..There are any solution to keep those ntfs metadata on Vista ? ..why Microsoft as not implemented this function ? |

I did a test of copying a file with some added information I made in the
Summary. The information copied over from an XP machine onto a Vista machine without losing the data. "Max" wrote in message ... "Metadata is stored by the file system, not with the file. I used a jpg file to do my test. .txt files do not have meta data that I can
edit anyway. Here is a link to more information about metadata...
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb897440.aspx It seems to really be "alternate data streams of information." "Max" wrote in message ... After some testing, the .jpg file does not appear to have this alternate
stream that contains this metadata. "Gary Mount" wrote in message ... I have been doing some further experimenting. using a .jpg file with some
comments I added, even when I copy the file to a fat formatted volume, the data I added is still retained. I would like to test this on a word document, but I haven't installed office on my system yet. (I recently had to reinstall my O/S after accidently reformatting my hard drive).
