Default IP gets changed automatically

Hi,
I am using window Vista OS .
The IP address assigned to my PC by sify is 10.x.x.x. Usually when i connect
the lan cable to my laptop and check
uing ipcofig i get the same IP ,But every now and then the IP gets chaged to
some other IP y.y.y.y .Now when i
go and check using the IP config my y.y.y.y Ip becomes the prefereed IP and
169.x.x.x becomes the duplicate IP
But if i check in the Manage Network pane where we set the IP address ,there
it will be showing the correct IP only
( x.x.x.x assigned by sify ) .Can any one please tell me how to resolve this
problem .

Regards,
Aady

What exactly is the problem?
Have you got trouble accessing shares?
Have you got problems getting the internet?
Are you using a router?
the ip address range 169.x.x.x is for local use on networks.
Ip addresses do change, in a dhcp network this is normal.

Hi ,

Thank you for your response .
Actually I am not able to connect to Internet when my IP changes to
169.y.y.y . It says another PC in the network has this IP and i receive a IP
conflict message . I am not using any router , just few days ago I took a
broad band connection from Sify and I directly connect that cable to my
Laptop.
70 % of the time my Laptop gets the correct IP (10.17.x.x) but once in every
2-3 days when i connect the cable and check ipconfig , I see that the Ip
that is detected is 169.y.y.y and as it is a broadband connection and i need
a satatic IP to connect , I couldnt connect to Internet . When this happens
my Automatically provisioned Ip becomes 169.y.y.y ( preferred) and 10.17.x.x.
becomes the duplicate IP .I have manually assigned that 10.17.x.x IP in that
Manage Network-IPv4-Properties pane but still the IP gets changed .

Hi ,

Thank you for your response
Actually I am not able to connect to Internet .When my laptop Ip gets
changed to 169.y.y.y ,I receive a IP conflict error message stating that
another PC in this network has similar IP . I recently took a broadband
connect from Sify . 70% of the time when I try to connect the internet my
laptop gets 10.17.x.x Ip ,but once in every 2-3 days when i connect it gets
changed to 169.y.y.y . I am not using any router . I directly connect that
lan cable provided from Sify to my Laptop.
As this is a broadband connect I was assigned a static Ip address (10.17.x.x).
I have manually assigned the same in the Manage Network - IPv4-Properties.
But still once in a while Ip gets changed and I can know this by doing a
ipconfig where it shows that the Automatically IP adress is shown as
169.y.y.y (preferred)
and Duplicate IP as 10.17.x.x (duplicate) . I tried Ipconfig release but
that didnt work too.Does this have anything to do with DHCP?

regards,
Aady
