System Requirements for RealTime 1080p video editing and Vista Ultimate?

Can a Vista Ready computer handle Vista Ultimate?

When will Vista Ultimate be available?

This system will be around for at least 5 years, and 1080p is the magic
number for both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. I would like a PC recommendation that can
handle the load, unfortunately I cannot wait due to the early demise of my
last system.

Thanks!

Just about any computer not older than 3 years or so can handle Vista
Ultimate, unless its a laptop (then you might not have the Aero graphics).
My 3 year old computer, Pentium 4 2.6Ghz (over clocked to 2.72Ghz) Hyper
threaded CPU can play 1080 p video just fine running Vista Ultimate RC2.

I wouldn't want to edit 1080p on anything less than a quad core. You can buy
a mother board now that can accommodate a quad core when they get cheaper
or you budget allows, and drop in a Core 2 duo or something cheaper for the
time being.

Gary,

If Vista will run on current pcs, why do they have certifications for
Vista-ready and Vista Premium-ready. Does that have more to do with HDCP,
HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, etc...?

Any suggestions on a Quad-core board?

Thanks!

Basic Vista will not run on all current PCs and Premium Vista ( Media
Center, Aero etc) will run on even less of them. See the following Link:

Default System Requirements forRealTime 1080p video editing and Vista

JW,

Thanks for the link, but the info is a little ambiguous. It does not clearly
state what features will not run on a regular pc with recommended
requirements vs. a Vista-capable vs. a Vista Premium-capable pc, other than
aero, which is just an invisible, graphically-enhanced user interface,
correct?

So I need a Vista Premium-capable pc that can handle realtime 1080p
playback/editing, any suggestions?

I did find this on nVidia's site listing recommended requirements for
playback only. Unfortunately, it does not list the requirements for editing
1080p.

http://download.nvidia.com/downloads...ing_a_HDPC.pdf

It will be fairly basic video editing, but it seems to me that 1080p24/30/60
will be the standard soon, and for the next five years or so, which is my
projected life for my main pc.

Perhaps you could direct me to a site that specializes in this area.

Thanks!

Default System Requirements forRealTime 1080p video editing and Vista

To me a regular PC that meets the recommended requirements is a Vista
capable PC and a regular PC that meets the Vista Premium requirements is a
Vista Premium capable PC. If you are sucessfully running the Vista RC2
ultimate Beta like many in this newsgroup are and have Media Center and aero
running then you have a regular PC that is Vista Premium capable.
When you say what you want to edit 1080P files what do you mean/ Do you
mean you want to edit decoded 1080p video, or 1080p encoded files in a
spedific format such as MPEG2, MPEG4 or WMV.
In any case I would recommend finding the file editing program(s) you may
want to use that currently works in XP and then see if the vendor of plans
to also have Vista version x(86) and Vista 64 bit versions.

Aero is a completely rewritten graphics sub system that uses the GPU to do
the work rather than the CPU. So its much more significant than just an
enhanced user interface. This allows the CPU to do other work rather than
graphics.

I am able to edit 1080p on my Pentium 4 with HT computer, no problem. I just
tried it out with Windows Movie Maker, on Windows Vista and a 1080p video
that I downloaded from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...tshowcase.aspx
