Default Keeping open window sizes

When I open a folder that contains a large number of files they are off the
"viewable" window area. I end up having to use the handles to resize the
window so I can see all my files. When I close the window and reopen it, it
has reverted back to the small size and I have to resize it again. This
doesn't happen on my XP machine a home.

Is there a way to make the resized window remain the size I need it? Or is
this a quirk of Vista?

Try this:
Control PanelFolder OptionsViewcheck - "Remember each folder's view
settings".
Does that do it?

Default Keeping open window sizes

Hi, Mike.

You didn't say, but I assume you are asking about Windows Explorer.

This window-sizing problem has been one of the most-complained-about aspects
of Windows for several generations over at least the past dozen years. The
problem persists in both Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer, the
browser. Fixes that work sometimes don't work other times. And fixes that
work don't always keep working.

Here's the one that worked for me tonight: Open a WE window by clicking
Start | All Programs | Windows Explorer. Use your mouse to move the window
to a corner of your screen, then to stretch it to fill the screen. Then
close the window with the X in the corner. Now, Click Start | Windows
Explorer. (It should now be in the left part of your Start menu.) Did the
size stick?

It should stick UNTIL you again resize it smaller and then close the window.
WE and IE remember the size of the final open window closed. So if you have
a small window and a large one open, be sure to close the small one first
and the large one last. If you somehow get it to opening at the small size
again, you'll have to repeat the resizing exercise.

The way that sizing should work - and does sometimes but not always - is to
right-click on Windows Explorer, then Properties, and set it to Run in a
Maximized window. The manual-resizing trick should work in a Normal window.

As you probably know, another way to get the window to fill the screen is
press F11 to toggle Full-Screen mode. That looks almost like Maximized, but
with some important differences that you will see.

If you've checked 'Remember each folder's view settings' as Bob described,
each folder should remember the size and position it was closed in.

If you're opening a different folder & then browsing to the folder in
question, the size will be determined by the window you first opened.

Hi Mike,

Use Method Two in this tutorial to reset the folder view settings so
Vista will remember the settings for how you last closed a window so it
will open it again the same way the next time you open it.
