I have tried to install two different network cards in 5384, and neither one
is working.
The first is a DEC500X, and I get close with that one, but it says Line not
found in INF file. The second card is a 3Com 9900 TX and it isn't working
either.

I also am not able to get a common Soundblaster Live! to work, but if I
could get a NIC to work I could probably get that an an ordinary 56K modem to
work.

Overall, it isn't bad. As a tech support professional, I can say I am happy
that MS moved everything under the sun around and basically took everybody
back to square one on the learning curve. I'd be having to find real work if
it wasn't for these brainiacs in Redmond.

Not sure if your mouse took off on you, but I didn't see a reply. Update to
the issue - I finally got a network card (3Com) working by downloading their
41MB install program, which is pretty slick, and should be for that size.
Following that, Vista found a driver for my sound card, which isn't the right
one, but at least it makes sounds. I'll have to check if the modem installed.
As I recall, I have an unknown PCI device, and it may be the modem voice
component. I am downloading rc1 today, and I understand it has more drivers
in it, so who knows - it may actually recognize all my hardware.
Still can't get into Media Center, though. I will try it again and post the
error message.

Ok, I'll try again. I just typed about three paragraphs, and then got an
error message. Nothing like trying to report an error message, and then
getting an error message trying to do that.
I don't see any comments in this reply except mine.
I got the 3Com to work by using their install program. Following that, Vista
found a driver for my sound card, but it doesn't appear to be the one for the
SB Live!
I'm not going to sweat it, but I would expect that existing, widely used
peripherals would be supported in this OS.
I'll copy all of this prior to hitting Post. I hate retyping stuff.
