Default Network customize option missing

I hope that someone can help me I have a Toshiba laptop which I had
networked to my home pc fine until recently when I accidently changed
the profile from private to public. I can no longer network the pc but
the big problem is I cannot change the profile back to private. When I
click on network and settings it tells me I am not connected to any
network and nothing else, the customize box which should be on the right
hand side and give me the option to change is missing. I have tried
re-installing but it is still the same. When I try to connect I can see
other connections but not my home pc. When I look in the firewall
settings it tells me it is set for public but I just don't know how to
change these settings.
