I am completely disappointed with backup and restore center regarding the
missing ability on selecting which folder I want to backup/exclude. MS still wants to keep everyone feel as dumb as their program designer. I demand MS to schedule a fix on this!!! I have Vista Ultimate and my Backup and Restore works perfectly. I can include or exclude any and all files I wish. Since you have demanded that Microsoft fix a non-issue I am certain they received your message and are diligently working on it as I type. They will, undoubtedly, contact you in person once they have complied with your demands. In addition, I would like to state that I would love to be as stupid (dumb denotes the inability to speak; it has nothing to do with intelligence or common sense) as Microsoft's software engineers. I could then get a real job. C.B. -- It is the responsibility and duty of everyone to help the underprivileged and less fortunate among us. |

CB,
First, I am using Ultimate. Second, if you ever read the product segment guide, you should know from Home Premium to Ultimate they share the same identical backup tool. The only difference on Home Premium and Ultimate is they introduce a ghost like thing called Complete PC backup (which takes horrible amount of spaces and time to backup, comparing to 3rd party tool like Acronis) You MUST BE LYING if you insist you can include/exclude files inside a backup job. This is well known fact, and both Paul's WinSuperSite and Zdnet UK has covered this annoyance since day one. Are you sure you are using the Vista not XP? (XP, on the other hand, comes with Veritas backup based solution, so that does have an interface to browse select which files to backup.) And don't tell me you can select Email, Pictures as selecting files and folder. Check the last option as 'Additional Files' and do you know that means EVERYTHING YOU HAVE IN YOUR COMPUTER BESIDES That 7 types? Its really nonsense way to do it. There are files I just dont want to backup at all (like if I have some kind of ISO image that I could easily get back from another download) and its absolutely not covered by the 7 types. I know MS trying to make this for average brainless users, but for more computer educated users this option just way too dumb. I don't understand if adding an option of selecting/excluding folder/files inside an 'Advance' options would be THAT obstructing for average users. The only reason I can tell from this backup is they have to break the deal with Veritas all a sudden so they have to come up with a gap filler in a short period of time. I accept this, but then that should means they would announce they are going to replace it, either in SP1 or sometime later. A very 'good' reason I can see is they want to sell their OneCare solution, but first its not available in my country, second I just don't want MS antivirus yet. And your 'Ultimate' reminder further hurts me- why as an Ultimate user, I still don't get something more powerful and different on backup? The only thing I got is the really fun (but useless) Texas 'Holdem and DreamScene. It's just Ultimate trick on money. I should have been buying Home Premium + Acronis if I know the backup solution sucks that much. "C.B." wrote: "goodwill" wrote in message ... I should have been buying Home Premium + Acronis if I know the backup solution sucks that much. Goodwill, I spent many days researching the various editions of Vista before deciding to purchase the Ultimate edition. I am very familiar with the differences among all the editions. I decided to purchase the Ultimate edition for the same reasons you decided to buy it. If I want to backup my pictures, or my music, or my videos, or my emails, or my documents, or my TV shows, or my compressed files, or a select few of these options I will use the "Back up files" option. If I choose to back up my complete system then I will use the "Back up computer" option. I wasn't very specific in my reply about this issue because you were not very specific about which files you wanted to back up. If you had been more forthcoming in what you desired to back up I would have been more specific in my answer and in all probability would have agreed with you. Yes, I am using XP Home and/or XP Pro on my other three computers but I use Vista Ultimate on this machine. I am very familiar with XP and all its functions. I don't use Live One Care because I think it is inferior to just about everything else available. I wish Microsoft would improve Live One Care to the point where it is a good application. Microsoft paid an astronomical amount of money to acquire Giant Software and I can't understand why they are incapable of improving it to the point whereby people will want to buy it. I fully agree with you concerning the "Ultimate Extras". Microsoft has not delivered on their promises concerning the Ultimate Extras and I am very disappointed. The typical excuse is that "Microsoft has been focused on SP1" but in my opinion that is no excuse at all. We were shortchanged big time and that's the truth. I feel that I overpaid for Ultimate by about $200.00 but there is nothing I can do about it now. I see a class action lawsuit in the future concerning this issue and I don't see Microsoft winning the case. They promised something and failed to deliver, and they failed miserably. I think it is going to cost them a small fortune. I only use the Ultimate backup and restore application on a monthly basis as a redundant measure. I also use my WD external drive's backup software on a monthly basis, also as a redundant measure. I do daily backups to three locations using my Acronis True Image Home 11 software and I am more than satisfied with it. It is my understanding, based upon articles I have read, that Norton's Ghost software is very good. I have never used Norton Ghost. I think Ghost 12 is the current version but I'm not sure. I do know they are almost ready to release Ghost 14. If my previous reply to your initial post offended you I apologize, but I only replied in the same tone and manner as your post was written. Sometimes I say things hastily and regret them later. It's one of my many faults. I suppose you could say I "put my foot in my mouth" but I don't think I could lift my leg that high anymore. I seriously need to hone my skills when it comes to my replies. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Again, please accept my sincere apology. Dear CB,
I really don't mind to do rational discussion. I come up with such 'Rant' because I am just disappointed. Let's face it, Vista is really one of the worst release among the Windows 2000 line. Windows 2000 are best improvement, then we got some usability improved on XP (and Remote Desktop Connection is really important addition). Now Vista- honestly I miss nothing on using Vista even I have been using it for at least 3 months. Explorer still crash from time to time (just it automatically give you options to restart that), no particularly improved performance, useless Flip 3D (talking about the flow around feature on Mac OS X is a lot more useful, and you can see the title when you hover mouse on it), and STILL inconsistent result on Instant Search (why adding new data to outlook requires index rebuild to see the result? shouldn't that just delegated to an search agent given that outlook itself is already an RDBMS? and why the result I have got for last 3 weeks suddenly disappear and I have to trigger a full reindex to fix such issue? Why Google Desktop Search is more consistent on search result?) Plus the inability to customize which version of Vista I want to use when I buy it from OEM (except Dell maybe, all retailers are not doing version replacement and they ask you to pay freaking much money to upgrade your Home Premium to business) I can spend all day long to talk about what is going really wrong here. There are really a lot of issues from Vista, just for paying money getting close to no improvement to XP is already a big deal- that makes me completely reluctant to purchase any more retail windows. Let's face it, we have been using Windows for that long period, and Vista has been the worst hiccup in MS history. I hate MS to hide this fact a lot, there are a lot of reviews with points I have mentioned telling why Vista sucks a lot. Try Mac OS X yourself- rock solid shell (no explorer crash), very usable UI features, and now Time Machine. Where is MS innovation now? The only way to fix MS is let them admit whats going wrong. My vote? Another XP SP2 like patch, at least- a patch that really fix the features going wrong, patch it until people are satisify. Thats the whole point why I start this thread and try to get as much people sign on it as possible. I really still hope MS are doing good- my next desktop for my living is Mac Mini, and I worry its going to be a point of no return already. I am a programmer so I can sense very in depth on a program's quality- probably a lot more than average users. MS smells really wrong on Vista this time. Lastly, CB if you think my discussion are rational, I hope you do join me on raising the voice- from your 2nd reply I dont think you are completely happy with your Vista purchase too (at least the Ultimate Extras?) Good day. William "C.B." wrote: "goodwill" wrote in message ... CB, First, I am using Ultimate.
