Default Vista/XP networking dilemma

As things stand right now:

PC #1 - Windows Vista Business. Firewall disabled. DHCP address from
Linksys wired DSL router.

PC #2 - Windows XP Pro. Firewall disabled. DHCP address from Linksys
wired DSL router.

Both machines are in the same workgroup.

************************************************** **********************************

The XP machine can ping the router, ping the Vista machine by IP
address, access the internet, access file shares on the Vista machine
by ip address (\\address\share). It cannot ping the Vista machine by
name.

The Vista machine can ping the router and access the internet. It
cannot ping the XP machine by name or address (request timed out).

Can anyone help me figure out what's going on?

Default Vista/XP networking dilemma

Try to disable the IPv6 on Vista. Also do you have 3rd party security
software?

Default Vista/XP networking dilemma

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer Sharing Wizard to include
Vista in your “New” Network, even if you had an XP Network set up prior to
adding a Vista computer to it.

Default Vista/XP networking dilemma

An unused Cisco vpn client was apparently doing some problematic
caching.

Once it was removed, all problems ceased and name resolution and file
sharing has resumed normally.

Can you tell us, was the removal on the PC end or the Enterprise (your
company) end?

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : 201334025
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
192.168.0.1

I notice the dns server is 192.168.0.1 and the gateway is 192.168.1.1 Could
that have been a problem?
