I do have 'Hide read messages' set in Windows Mail.
I plan to keep it that way. It's a time waster to trawl through previous
posts. When I access a newsgroup all I want to see are unread messages. It's
the responsibility of the poster to quote relevant information.

So honestly, I'm really lost as to why there appears to be two different
threads going on in one....

Same here.
And I set news posts to be deleted after 30 days, so if someone responds to
an older one, I can't see it even if I view all messages.

Bob

While I agree with you, one thing to remember is that many posters have
never seen a newsreader and they have no idea that their messages are being
posted anywhere else except the forum they are seeing, much less to a
Microsoft newsgroup. Their whole world is the 'chat room' forum they are
posting from. It's a never ending exercise in frustration to try and educate
everyone who posts from so many different locations.
