I think you people are creating many more problems for yourselves than you are correcting. Instead of simply jumping in with these "high octane" "solutions" wouldn't it be MUCH easier to simply THINK about the situation? The best thing for you to do would be to do a "backstep" to a time before you began implementing these wonderful solutions. To do this, just press F8 as the computer is booting. Having done so, you'll be offered choices; the choice you need to take is to continue booting from the time when your computer worked well. This will eliminmate all of the "repairs" you have attempted. Now, you will have a clean enviroment from which to proceed. Your "programs, work, and etc..." will still be there. Now you NEED to do COMPLETE maintenence; VIRUS scan, DEFRAG, UPDATE. After which you NEED to UNINSTALL any of the "free" programs which have been so generously provided via the internet. AFTER that stuff has been done you need to do COMPLETE maintenence AGAIN. This stuff is going to take time and effort! There is no "easy or quick" way to solve your problems. THINK about it. -- MrGW77 Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

Reading the previous post brought to mind something else. In the case where you do not have a previous backup (A good one). You should still be able to "roll back" to the time you first installed windows. I forget exactly how it was done; I had to do it once with XP because I had, foolishly, installed a "helpful" utility. Windows will always keep a copy of the original install to use for reference. This command had to be carried-out in DOS and it involved searching through the C:\ directory. The file is one of the hidden files so you need to first tell the computer to display all files. I don't have the time at the moment but this is very worth investigating if you need to. There are sites where information like this and many other useful things are discussed, just do a google search for them looking for "techie" sites -- MrGW77 Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

Hello,
Do you have SP1 installed? With some file corruptions in the OS, SFC would fail like the error message you are reporting. Particularly when there was manifest corruption. The following tool attempts to fix manifest corruption 947821 Description of the CheckSUR update for Windows Vista and for Windows Vista for x64-based systems http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;947821 After you get SP1 on the system, SFC is more tolerant of corrupted files that could cause the issue and continues on. MrGW77;729080 Wrote: The "problem" you're having is because you're not elevating the command to Administrator level. To do this, start ALL PROGRAMS-ACCESSORIES-then right-click command prompt and choose RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR. This will open an elevatede command prompt where3 you type SFC /scannow (EXACTLY as I've shown you) then just let it run and only touch the keyboard if input is requested of you. It may (should) take only about 10 or 15 miniutes; if it takes more time then just let it go, when finished you'll have a brand new startup (system install) "SFC /scannow" gives the following message when verification is 19% complete: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation". -- horiageorg Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

I have the same issues are listed on the above notes in the thread. I'll detail what is happening on my laptop and hopefully someone can give some insight: I ran sfc /SCANNOW in cmd with elevated rights (run as administrator) I got the error "Windows REsource Protection could not perform the requested operation" I ran chkdsk /r /f (on reboot of course) I ran the sfc /SCANNOW again, this time it ran to 100% of the verification process, then came up with the Windows Resource Protection.. error message.
