Have you tried getting it from the Broadcom Website instead?
WinUpdate driver updates are often out of date or incompatible with other
software on your system.

It's probably just as well. It's a bad idea to install drivers from Windows
Update. See general information below.

The First Law of Driver Updates is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Normally if everything is working you want to leave things as they are. The
exception is that heavy-duty gamers will usually want to update their video
and sound drivers to squeeze every last bit of performance out of the
hardware to get the fastest frame rates. If you're not one of those people,
you don't need to update your drivers if there are no problems you are
trying to solve.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

quinn,

My system uses a Broadcom network adaptor. I will, at times, be offered
a Broadcom driver update through Windows Update that I know is not for my
adaptor. It is for a different model adapter and the only way for me to stop
this update is to hide it. You should go into Device Manager and check the
modem model on your system. It could be that this update does not apply to
your system because you use a different model. Therefore you will not be
able to install it no matter how many times you try.
It's possible the driver listed in the update is already installed.
Also, at times, you will have a newer driver than the one offered in the
update. Both of these situations can cause an installation failure.
I use DriverAgent to keep track of my hardware devices updates, Secunia
PSI to keep track of my software updates and Belarc Advisor to check for
needed security updates. DriverAgent also offers me incorrect drivers and
out of date drivers at times. Belarc Advisor will sometimes inform me that I
need a security update that I know is already on my system. I guess what I'm
trying to say is that you should not trust vendors to provide you with
correct or current information. However, as Malke mentioned, I don’t update
my drivers unless one of them is causing a problem or needs to be updated
for compatibility.
Again, as Malke stated, I always go the the third party vendor's
website for downloading any hardware or software updates. Many vendors
provide their drivers and updates to Microsoft for the convenience of users
but Microsoft can at times be very lax in providing them on time. But then
again, to be fair, Microsoft does this as a favor and has no duty or
responsibility to do so.
I have also been offered updates for a product made by "vendor A" when
in fact my system has a product made by "vendor B". I don't know why this
happens but it does on an infrequent basis. I never blindly download and
install updates offered by Microsoft or anyone else.
Let me know when you discover the cause of the problem. I'm curious as
to why your installation fails.

C.B.
