I am trying to network my Vista Ult PC with an XP Pro PC and am working
through the usual problems and recommended settings and solutions. However, I cannot turn "On" Network Discovery in the Network and Sharing Center. Instead, it shifts to "Custom". What does this mean and how do I get it "On"? David |

David David, I would recommend you check out the templates in the group edit portion of both Vista and XP Pro. To open that control, Start/Run/type "Gpedit.msc" (minus the quote markers) in the box and click "OK". Gene -- ncgenek |

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing. Permissions/Share info is there as well. If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall. 1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is the SAME. In Vista Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers) Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc) File Sharing: ON Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared Docs) Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer. Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer Sharing Wizard to include Vista in your “New” Network, even if you had an XP Network set up prior to adding a Vista computer to it. -- Mick Murphy - Qld - Australia "David Salmon" wrote: I am trying to network my Vista Ult PC with an XP Pro PC and am working through the usual problems and recommended settings and solutions. David My Network Discovery is also 'Custom' and everything works fine. All shares and file copies are OK in all directions to/from an XP machine and a NAS, 'Network' shows those devices and a router immediately and they all have a solid Internet connection through the router. A full network map is shown when required (though that is largely cosmetic) apart from the NAS which can't be placed on the diagram. I have One Care which has its own firewall. Having said all that I don't really know which setting makes it 'custom', it may be the NAS, but for me it seems not to matter. My point is that if everything works it is *of itself* not a problem. That is not a barrier to discovery working, all it means is that the Windows defaults are not all in place, for instance a couple of services aren't running on my machine so the setting is 'Custom' rather than 'On'. Discovery doesn't seem affected. -- Chris Game "Drawing on my fine command of language, I said nothing." -- Mark Twain |

Looks like some system services are disabled or not started. Click Start and type Services.msc in the dialog box to open the services snap-in. Then check if the following services are started: --SSDP Discovery --TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper --Computer Browser --Server If not, set the startup type to automatic and click start to start the services. I also has a vista ultimate pc and was not able to turn network discovery on. I checked in the services snap-in and found that the SSDP Discovery was not started. With the SSDP Discovery services started, I was able to turn the network discovery on. You should try this.
