A very frustrating feature of Vista is the inability to copy certain files
such as executable files over a network. Any attempt to copy an exe file from the network to an individual computer produces a message that this needs permission but then fails to complete the copy. Is there any way to configure Vista to allow me to copy a exe file form the network to another computer on the network. |

Hi
Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is allowed to be shared. The answer is likely in one of the references that Jack provided. We'll see
how (if) Ken responds and go from there. ... or, are you having the same problem, tried all these things and still have this condition? -- Regards, BobF. "Gordon" wrote in message ... Hi Ken,
I was having the same problem, with copying exes and certain other files types from my XP computer to my Vista computer. Your post led me, indirectly, to a solution, which was to turn off simple file sharing on my XP computer: 1. Open My Computer 2. Go to ToolsFolder Options 3. Go the View Tab 4. In Advanced Settings, scroll to the bottom and uncheck "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)". That did the trick, at least in my case. (You didn't mention if the file you were trying to copy was on a Vista or XP machine.) I figured this out while trying out the advice in the following article regarding taking ownership of files in XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421 I found that my user account already had ownership of the files in question (and the same user account exists on both computers), but it was the mention of turning off simple file sharing that did the trick. Hope this helps someone else who's tearing their hair out! "Ken Varley" wrote: A very frustrating feature of Vista is the inability to copy certain files such as executable files over a network. Hi, Just wanted to say thanks. I just got a new notebook with Vista Home Premium, and among other various frustrations I ran into this one. I've networked my new notebook with my XP Pro notebook to copy my data over and ran into this problem of not being able to copy some file types, including .exe files. Turning off simple file sharing on my XP Pro system worked. I don't know how you guys figure out how to do this stuff, but I sure do appreciate it! Now if someone could just write me a Vista USB driver for my Handspring Visor Edge PDA I'd really be happy .Lisa Alan F;743609 Wrote: Hi Ken, I was having the same problem, with copying exes and certain other files types from my XP computer to my Vista computer.
