Default Shortcut overlay went nuts

I am running vista 32, I have had no problems with it in the last year
however, my shortcut overlay has gone nuts...I was installing a update for
my printer, when it asked for a reboot, my shortcut overlay turned into an
unknown file type.....all the shortcuts are there under the unknown file
symbol.
I rolled back the computer to yesterday, no change, I looked at Microsoft's
web site, no luck, I tried a program that turns off the overlay It came up
with an error message. I have scanned for virus's nothing. I am now
getting frustrated.
I have attached a copy of the debugging message, anyone able to help?

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

configuration
system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" /
/configuration

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.
