Whenever I start up my Windows XP I get a window titled "system 32" and
warning me I shouldn't tamper with it. How can I stop it appearing at start
up?

Here is the answer as it pertains to XP; it is probably the same for Vista:

This can be caused by a blank entry, such as can be left behind by an
incomplete program removal, in the:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and/or
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.
