I have looked over previous threads on this newsgroup, but they have not lead
me to a solution to my networking problem, so I am trying again.

I have recently added a new Vista Home Preium desktop machine to an existing
Windows network. I have a workgroup with at least five Windows machines
happily coexisting. Those machines are two XP machines, two Windows 2K
machines and a Windows 2003 Server machine. They can all see each other and,
with proper permissions, can share files.

I added the Vista machine, giving it a unique machine name, the same
Workgroup name and specifying a private network with Discovery on, file and
printer sharing on, and password protected sharing. All machines have static
IP addresses on my 13 address IP subnet.

The Vista machine can only see itself in the workgroup. None of the other
machines can see the Vista machine, but they can still see each other. Since
these machines cannot even see each other. The Vista machine can ping the
other machines, but the other machines cannot ping the Vista machine. The
Vista machine cannot even ping itself.

I tried turning off Windows Firewall on the Vista machine (I have a firewall
appliance sitting between the DSL modem and my local subnet switch) but the
behaviour remained the same.

Any ideas?

As you are sharing with an XP machine, you may need to install the Link Layer
Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on the XP machine

I did install the LLLTP update to no effect.
