Okay so far everyone who asked a question about disk defragmenter not running
has been told it actually is running in the background, well mine isn't! I
open disk defragmenter from the options menu and get the screen and it tells
me that performance could be improved by defragmenting, so I click the
defragment now button, select the drive I want defragmented and then okay.
The screen says defragmenting for about 3 seconds (with the spinning wheel
going) and then the prompt returns to what it originally said. I've looked
in the system monitor and defrag is not running!

What can I do to get disk defragmenter to run? I know I can install a third
party defragmenter but that is only a way around the problem, not a solution
for the problem.

Check with defrag last ran; Opeb My ComputerPropertiesRtClick
drivePropertiesTools tabDefrag now - info box will list last defrag run.

Check "Applications" tab in Task Mnager to verify defrag is running. It is
a "low-level" utility - it runs as permitted by current computer activity.

By default Vista runs defrag 3:00 on Wednesday - Use task scheduler to
modify

As I stated disk defragmenter is not running. It shows the last time it ran
as 2/15/08 and when I check task manager it does not show it running even
after I've just started it! So as I originally stated it is not a running.

Hi Msradell,

I find that the free Auslogics Disk Defrag is a better program to
use. You might give it a try to see what you think about it.

the built-in vista defrag ? Will it take just as long as the built-in
which takes FOREVER ?

Yes, it's completely compatible. Although you should only run one at a
time. Auslogics will run much faster than the one in Vista. Plus, it has
all the graphs and a progress bar to let you know how long it has left.

You need to go to the Processes tab and click the "Show processes from all
users" button. Have you done that?

Just to satisfy myself, I ran my Disk Defragmenter while I had the Task
Manager open (with Show processes from all users), and there I see:
Defrag.exe -- Disk Defragmenter Module
DfrgMtfs.exe -- Disk Defragmenter NTFS Module
dfrgui.exe -- Microsoft Disk Defragmenter

Do you not see these items?

Do a system restore to a date and time prior to 2/15 when it last ran.
Once completed, see if it works again. I know this doesn't find what's
causing this problem, but is at least a solution and not a work around
for you. Be mindful of any changes you make to the system; This will
help you diagnose what's causing it when/if it happens again.
