Default create new backup hard drive

I have a desktop running windows XP. I have 2 hard drives, one is the
master and the other is jumpered as the slave drive.
I want to mirror the master so that the slave is exactly the same. I don’t
care about incremental. I would do the complete write weekly. If my hard
drive crashes I want to be able to change jumpers on the slave to make it the
master, reboot the machine and keep on going.
What software will do this ?
I also have a laptop running Windows Vista(home) that I backup to a external
Maxtor(USB).
If I replaced a crashed laptop drive could I also restore it from the Maxtor
completely, reboot and keep running ?

Use dd.exe, a 1:1 copier.

I could not find on my system.
Where do I find dd.exe and what paramaters for exec.
I did a search for it and got this:
The unsafe files using this name are associated with the malware group
Trojan.DoS.Win32.Opdos.Some files using the name DD.EXE are also associated
with the malware groups: ??

Try Acronis True Image
Maxtor: Depends on what you are using to backup
