Default Internet Explorer & Microsoft Registr Server issue

Repost:

What updates were installed when you "ran the last update" (e.g.,
Vista
SP1; driver update) and when did you run it?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party
firewall (if any)?

Ok, so I was messing around with the date and time on my computer and
noticed that if the date is set prior to march 14, I do not get the
message
popping up when I open a browser window or tab. But if the date is set
anywhere from March 14 to today, the message pops up.

Now I'm really confused and hope someone can help. Thanks, Anne

Thanks for any help you can give.

KB946041 was the last udate I installed and it was on the 18th. I unistalled
and reinstalled it so the original installation took place around the 17th.

I run Norton 10.2. I completly uninstalled it and still had the same
problem. There are no other anit-spyware applications except Defender and no
firewall that I am aware of on the computer.

KB946041 was the last udate I installed and it was on the 18th.

But was that the only update you installed from Windows Update on the 18th?

I run Norton 10.2. I completly uninstalled it and still had the same
problem

Norton applications are notorious for not uninstalling cleanly. If "Norton
10.2" is Norton Internet Security (NIS), give this a whirl:

1. Assuming NIS is currently installed, your subscription is current, and
you may want to reinstall it at some point, make certain you have a copy of
your Product Key then uninstall all Norton software (including LiveUpdate)
via Add/Remove Programs.

2. Enable the Windows Firewall.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) except #4 below until your anti-virus
application has been installed and fully updated!

3. Run the appropriate version of this removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039

4. Reboot, and immediately:

(a) uninstall KB946401 if currently installed; and then

(b) install Avira AntiVir* (free), or the 30-day free trial version of,
e.g., NOD32**, KAV7***

5. Reboot and reinstall KB946401.

6. Manually update your new anti-virus application then run a full system
scan.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If the behavior persists despite the above, I'd recommend that you...
Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527
Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport
For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB946401).
[Don't forget to subscribe to your new AV appplication or uninstall it and
then reinstall the Norton application before the free-trial period expires
(if applicable)! Should you decide to reinstall the Norton application, I
recommend not installing any Norton Add-ons for a while.]
