What needs to be done to get the connection through the router i'm using it's
a arris that comcast supplied with a port for a usb to a smaller hub that is right next to the ethernet cable that plugs in the back of it . |

It is not clear to me what is that you have Network Hardware wise. If the Router is Wireless and the Laptop is Wireless you can set the laptop to work with it. Otherwise you need a Ethernet port for each computer. If both computer connect to the Router and can use the Internet (wire or Wireless), then it is just a matter of setting the computers Sharing.
