Well, I installed build 5536. It didn't go quite as planned.
I wanted to try a straight upgrade. I put the disk in and ran it from my Vista 5384 desktop. Everything seemed to go fine, a bit long- took about 80 minutes. When I got to the final screen- "Please wait while Windows loads your desktop for the first time", something like that. All of a sudden it rebooted, I thought it was part of the setup. Okay.... I let it restart. I let it restart several times. It just wouldn't finish. I tried the repair option. Nada. I tried unplugging everything. Nada. When Vista went through the compatibility check, it didn't flag anything. I had Office beta installed, Trend beta installed, and a few other things. Nothing got flagged by the conflict inspection that Vista runs. So, anyway. I just did a clean install. No problems, it installed in about 20 minutes. First observations: Much better build, by far. Responsive and quick. Shorter boot time. However, I still had to fiddle around with my sound drivers to get them to work. After install and then update, the sound (SigmaTel) didn't work. I used the WinXP install program for SigmaTel. Just like I had to do in Beta 2. I had sound. Then I ran update again, it found the updated drivers, installed them, and the sound is wonderful. My built in wireless card was having all kind of issues- it worked flawlessly in Beta 2. So, I tried a wireless Linksys USB adaptor, now it works flawlessly. It didn't work so well with Beta 2. Although, I still had to use the drivers from the Linksys WinXP disk. I see a bunch of improvements. I'm still messing around with stuff. Getting ready to install Trend's beta AV for Vista. It had worked well in build 5384. Okay, guys and gals, let's get in some feedback. -Michael |

Had to go out so left it for about 30-45 minutes, when I came back still plenty of disk activity and still the 'black screen'. Rebooted to do a clean reinstall from XP but wasn't quick enough and Vista booted in and (the happy bit) finished the installation correctly with all hardware and installed software (apart from Avast, which I knew about) seemingly running without problems. Very impressed with the response time in 5536 compared with 5384 and the only problem I have encountered so far is that the new Windows Experience Index will not complete ('unknown error has caused WinSat to fail in an unexpected way'). If that's the only problem I encounter there won't be too many complaints from me. Geoff |
