When I went to "Installed Updates" ( not update history ), I couldn't find optional updates that I had installed, i.e. MS Silverlight 1.0 (KB946609). All I saw were those downloaded automatically. So, how do I uninstall the optionals when I need to ? That Silverlight is a little intrusive. I had to do a system restore to get rid of it. I'd like to know a direct way, if there is any. Thank you. -- davidjchuang |

The update KB946609 doesn't show up where the other updates are listed and doesn't show up in the uninstall a program area either. I'll keep checking for a solution on this. I'm glad the system restore option worked for you. -- .Joe _[image: http://uswave.net/vistax64/joetmvx64.png] (\"http://www.vistax64.com\")_ _*::Click_here_for_the_Vista_Forums::* (\"http://www.vistax64.com/index.php?referrerid=17621\")_ _Geekbench_Sco_4050 (\"http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/42901\")_ _CPU-Z_Verified (\"http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=323179\")_ _**_ |

It happened to me once already, not too long ago. Anyway back to the subject matter. I had already removed Silverlight via system restore, so I can't check that out. However I also had installed an optional called " Other Hardware. HID Non-user Input Data Filter " about 3 weeks ago( it does not have a code #, i.e. KB ---". I cannot find that one in Programs & Features. It is not in the "Installed Updates" list either. Seems to me the mystery is still there. Can you enlighten me? Thank you. -- davidjchuang |

It is the optional update Microsoft released in January for their keyboards and mice drivers. I suggest you leave it installed. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911895 Charlie42 |

'The screen saver does not work when you use a Microsoft wireless pointing device on a Windows Vista-based computer' (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911895) Charlie42 Thank you, Charlie42. I have no intention to uninstall this one. I brought it up only to illustrate my puzzle of how to remove unwanted optional updates if I cannot find them in " Installed Updates" file. 2 more additional questions please : - 1.) When an optional update is made available, how do I find out what it is for, in order to decide if I want it or not. 2.) Someone told me that he wanted to install the optional " HID Non-user Input Data Filter", but he couldn't find it from his Windows Updates. Any reason ? Can he go to MS web site and ask for it ? Awaiting for your responses. Thank you. -- davidjchuang |

1.) When an optional update is made available, how do I find out what it is for, in order to decide if I want it or not. It shows up in Windows Update when you search for available updates. Since it is optional, you have to tick it for download yourself. To find out what good an update is for, search the Knowledge Base for it's KB number. http://support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1 2.) Someone told me that he wanted to install the optional " HID Non-user Input Data Filter", but he couldn't find it from his Windows Updates. Any reason ? Can he go to MS web site and ask for it ? No. As far as I know, this update is only available through Windows Update. Your friend should first try to plug in his or her Microsoft keyboard/mouse before searching for new updates. If that does not work, (re-)install the IntelliPoint software and search for the update again. http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mo.../Download.mspx Charlie42 |

I'll relay the message. As to the Knowledge Base, I used the link you gave me, entered " other hardware hid non-user ---", and before I finished, a list of names showed up one of which was the one I wanted. I hit search button, and it told me no match found. Well, how did it get that " other hardware ---" name on the list in the first place ?? I must have missed something. -- davidjchuang |

Just a little piece of advice: If a search comes up blank, try to broaden it by using fewer search words. These are the links to the two KB articles in question: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911895/ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913405/ Well, how did it get that " other hardware ---" name on the list in the first place ?? I must have missed something. This update is classified in the Other Hardware category because the driver is for peripherals native to neither Vista nor the computer. Even though the products and software bear Microsoft's name, this is not an OS update. Charlie42 |
