Default can't connect wireless laptop to shared printer

We have vista on both desktop (office-pc) and wireless laptop (daniel-pc) and
a canon mp830 connected to the desktop pc.

Desktop has macafee with firewall off and laptop had pc-cillin with firewall
off

Both machines have identical sharing & discovery settings (no passwords),
and the printer is shared.

Both pc's see the other's files and printer. I plugged the MP830 into the
laptop and let vista install the drivers.

When the printer is connected to the desktop pc, and I try to connect from
the laptop, I get the 0x00000012 error. I then followed the advice in this
forum and tried to create a local port on the laptop printer as
\\office-pc\Canon830 and I get 'access denied'.

Now, here's the thing, I plugged the printer into the laptop and tried to
connect to it from the desktop. I clicked START, NETWORK, Daniel-pc and then
right clicked the printer and clicked connect and IT DID. I then printed a
document from the desktop to the printer connected to the laptop.

Next i uninstalled the printer from the desktop and then plugged it back in
and let vista install the drivers as I had the laptop, thinking that perhaps
there was a snag in the Canon software. I also downloaded the vista driver
from Canon as I had done for the laptop.

But when I tried to connect the desktop printer from the laptop, I once
again got the 0X00000012 error.

I've been round and round with this for a week and i must be missing some
little thing. Can anyone help??

Thanks,

Dan

You may want to re-map the printer using the IP instead of name, for example
192.168.x.x\Canon830.

For what its worth I have never installed a shared printer the way you are
doing it.
On my laptop I picked install printer and selected the desktops printer and
then just loaded the drivers for the printer from the Printers installation
CD.
I appears that by connecting the printer to the laptop it is installing and
configuring the drivers to only work with a local printer.

You hook the printer up to ONE(1) computer, and add the others; not just
install it everywhere!!!

You install the drivers on the other comps, not drag the printer around the
room!

Once it is hooked to one, go to the other computer(leaving the printer
where it is!!!)Network and SharingAdd Network Device Browse for the
Desktop's Printer, and follow instructions to install!!!

Default can't connect wireless laptop to shared printer

Hi Robert,

I tried the ip instead of the name for the local port and got the same
'access denied'.
I've read alot of these postings and it seems that most people are having
good luck with the work around that has this local port change at the end of
the procedures. I couldn't find any posts that reported the same 'access
denied' message as I'm getting.

We have a linksys router with wpa restriction - would that be a problem?

Can you suggest another course of action?

Thanks,

Dan

Sounds like permission issue. Try to ping the remote computer first. If it
gets reply, double check the permission. If the ping gets time out, make
sure no firewall block sharing.

I suggest that you disable the security restrictions on your router until
you have everything working correctly and then try to enable them.
