I have XP Home on my desktop and it has an external Western Digital USB
attached drive that I have set up as shared on the network. I also have
allowed updates from netowrk users in the share settings. I can see the drive
from my Vista Home Premium laptop, but when I try to access it I get an
error: "drivename" is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this
network resource. Not enough server storage is available to process this
command.

Now I shared the internal C drive on the desktop with the same share
settings and I can access that drive from Vista with no problem. The only
things I can't access on the C drive are documents and settings, WINNT and
other systems folders, whcih is, I assume, as it should be. Otherwise I can
access all the folders and files on the C drive.

I have Norton Internet Security on the desktop and Norton 360 on the laptop,
but my home network is in the trusted group for both firewalls and, since I
can see the drive and can also access the C drive, it doesn't appear to be a
firewall problem, but some kind of permissions problem, and of course I can't
set permissions on the XP Home system.

Can someone explain to me what is wrong? I have been searching for days on
the web for answers, but as yet have not found a pertinent answer.

Thanks Joe. I'll review this article. However I have new information. I added
my daughter's laptop to my home network. Her laptop runs XP Home also. I had
the exact same problem trying to access the external drive from her XP
laptop, but could access the desktop C drive, etc. just as I can from my
Vista laptop. So perhaps this isn't relaled to Vista at all; this makes it
even more confusing. Any further thoughts?

Thanks Jack. My problem is sharing an external USB drive attached to an XP
Home system with a Vista system and anoterh XP Home system. The drive is
FAT32; from some of the reading I have done, it appears that maybe this could
be causing permissions problems. Could that be? If I format the drive NTFS
could that help? The article on XP file sharing you referenced seems to
indicate that sharing would work with an NTFS format.

I found reference to the convert.exe utility and am going to look into using
that to reformat the drive.

I used convert.exe to change the format of the external drive from FAT32 to
NTFS. Unfortunately the sharing problem still exits. I am running our of
ideas.
