Hello
Before Installing Vista Ultimate X64 SP1 my wired (crossover cable)lan was working fine. Network identified as private Home network. Settings below with static IP Vista Ultimate x64 IP 192.168.0.1 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Default gateway 192.168.0.1 Default Dns 192.168.0.1 Win XP IP 192.168.0.2 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Default gateway 192.168.0.1 Default Dns 192.168.0.1 After I install SP1 setting as follows Vista Ultimate x64 IP 192.168.0.1 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Default gateway Default Dns 192.168.0.1 Win XP IP 192.168.0.2 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Default gateway 192.168.0.1 Default Dns 192.168.0.1 Vista computer is connected to the internet with dial up modem. Vista and XP connected with crossover cable no router. The problem is after SP1 I can't set the default gateway on vista. Every time I type the setting 192.168.0.1 and close the network center even after reboot the gateway setting is cleared. As a result the network is Unidentified network Public I can chance the public to private but after reboot it is again public. I can however open XP in the network and share files with XP. I have already disable IPv6 with no luck. Any help will be appreciated. Jan Below is the contents of Ipconfig/all Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001] Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. We have many issue with this settings:
IP 192.168.0.1 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Default gateway 192.168.0.1 Default Dns 192.168.0.1 The Vista can't be DNS. Why does the Default gateway points to 192.168.0.1? Can you ping each other by name? -- Bob Lin, MS-MVP, MCSE & CNE Networking, Internet, Routing, VPN Troubleshooting on http://www.ChicagoTech.net How to Setup Windows, Network, VPN & Remote Access on http://www.HowToNetworking.com "JP Du Plessis" wrote in message ... Yes I can ping by name. The default gateway point to 192.168.0.1 because when you enable ICS the gateway is chance to 192.168.0.1.ICS is not enable at this moment. The problem is that the gateway setting will not stay. Jan |

A computer can't be its own default gateway or DNS server, so your previous settings specifying 192.168.0.1 weren't technically valid. When you connect to your dial-up ISP, Vista's dial-up connection will get default gateway and DNS server settings from your ISP. The default gateway and DNS server settings don't determine whether a network is public or private. Something else is causing the network to be identified as public. I've seen Vista temporarily mis-identify a network as public for a few minutes after the computer starts, then correctly identify it as private. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. Getting exactly the same results. Have 2 Vista machines. One connected to a cable modem as the host which is Vista Home Premium, ICS has been set on the modem. The 2nd PC has Vista Ultimate and connects to the host computer through a hub. Initially the host IP was set to 192.168.0.1 subnet of 255.255.255.0 and the gateway was set to 192.168.0.1 which is what I was told to do to get a Home network and not an unidentified network which occured when the gateway was left out. The client was set to 192.168.0.50 subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a gateway of 192.168.0.1. After installing SP1 on both machines, the 2nd client machine cannot get to all websites. It can get to some but not others! Checked the host machine where the ICS has been set and noticed the network is now an unidentified public network. The IP address of the LAN is now 192.168.0.1 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and no gateway. Tried to put the gateway in as 192.168.0.1 the setting does not stay. I know the websites are all ok as when I go to the host machine you can connect to the site. However on the client you cannot. Any ideas please? -- krisd1234 |

The host get a static IP of 192.168.0.1 from ICS. I am no expert but I hope this help. Jan |

You can make these manual IP settings on an ICS client: IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1x255) Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 DNS Server = 192.168.0.1 or your ISP's DNS server -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see.
