Default Vista is slower than XP

Moving a 1Gb file from 1 folder to another takes about 1 minute on my machine
with RC1. My pc experience index is 5.0. I'm sure this is much slower than
with XP Home on the same machine.

This is after 2 days with RC1.

Is there something going on in the background that doesn't show in Task
Manager?

Turn off your antivirus and see what happens then. I found that by
turning it off I got the full bandwidth of the SATA2 Drive. With it on
I got a quarter. You have to expect this with a beta OS and more
importantly Beta antivirus software.

Yes, could be. I'll try that just out of curiousity. Obviously I need to keep
the AV running normally.

Why? Do you normally download executables from web sites or double-click on
e-mail attachments?

Neither of those Pete but I run P2P all the time downloading music and games
and, every now and then, they contain viruses. Once a student here downloaded
a virus that prevented access to all 3 hard drives - even with a setup cd. We
had to reload everything. After that experience I don't trust anything!

It is slower than Xp in every possible way, no matter what rating vista
gives you for your hardware, if you use the same hardware for Xp it will be
way faster.

It is not the hardware, it is the inexperienced developers at Microsoft who
are writing Vista, or maybe the very experienced developers but who don't
care about performance, or a mix of both of them, who knows.

Xp was a good OS, and if the final Vista is the RC1 with fewer bugs; 2007
will be the year when Microsoft butchered Windows (very ugly interface when
not using the glass, and slower in performance in every possible way).

Just drives you mad, you read something good about Vista, you install the
RC1, you suffer from the performance problems, you will get angry (like me
right now), and you will install Xp back again, and wait for the next good
article about vista, to go all over that thing again.

Some day, in order to get accepted for a job in Microsoft, you should
actualy know some math and how to code, and until this day comes, we will
all suffer from performance problems, or buy faster hardware.

1.6 gig file transfer and it was instantaneous, I didnt even see a file
transfer process box?

I have loaded RC1 clean and have not yet loaded a AV and still find moving
files to or from the RC1 machine painfully slower than one would find in XP

we'll have File system performance optimizations with the final build.
Remember that Vista is still in development!!!

Default Vista is slower than XP

I have just recently installed RC1 Build 5600 and it is almost not usuable.
I understand that it is a pre-release and I have used many pre-release
versions prior to this, but never had these problems. I know that there are
issues with drivers, and I am still trying to find usable drivers. My
rating is 1.0

This is a new system that I just built several weeks ago and it ran just
fine with XP. It is a 3.4 GHz PIV D with 512 Mbs of DDR2 memory.

So far I like what I have seen with the operating system, and looking
forward to the final release, but if I can't resolve some of these issues
within the next few days, I will be forced to go back to XP.

I usually do clean installs, but for several reasons, I did not do that this
time. I upgraded Windows XP Home Edition

Any suggestions ould be appreciated.
