Default USB Mouse & KYBD non-functional after recent update

After nothing else worked, and after Dell could not assist, I ended up using
an old Ghost image from 1/23 to restore my machine. I had all the data
backed up, so I just had to re-copy it to the new installation. It is
incredible to me that MS caused me, and probsbly 1000's others, an incredible
loss - and there was no way to get any help from them, short of paying to
talk to one of their reps. It was their updates that caused the problem for
me - not any Dell issue. It is scary to think that they could offer an
"important" update that would render my computer absolutely useless - for
what good is a computer that cannot be interacted with froma either a mouse
or keyboard?

Now I am faced with about 23 "important" updates to apply to my image from
1/23 - and I can say that I am now leery of just installing them anymore. I
think in the long run this will hurt MS's efforts to get people to use
automatic updates.

Thanks to those of you who read my request for help and responded. I wish
you better luck than me on the solution.

If you have a PS/2 mouse and/or keyboard you could try to use them, it worked
for me. I read other posts, where this didn't help as well... so maybe...

I have read other posts on this subject, but cannot try to apply the
suggested solutions. I have neither a mouse nor a keyboard working. When I
try to get into Safe Mode, the desktop comes up, but I cannot interact wthout
a mouse/keyboard. I booted to the Vista DVD, and restored to earlier times -
twice - and the problem persists. The mouse and keyboard work when I boot
from the Vista DVD. I am using a Dell E521 with Vista Home Basic. I called
Dell support, but nothing they tried worked either. Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

t-4-2,

Thanks for the reply. I have a Dell E521 Desktop. Unfortunately, it was not
possible to try ANY solution, because I could not input anything via mouse or
keyboard. Even Safe mode didn;t work. Only when I booted from the Vista DVD
was I able to use the mouse. I eventually booted from my Ghost 12.0 disk and
re-installed an old image from 1-23-08.

Hello, you didn't mention what Dell people said. Based on that, try
checking the status of your touchpad and mouse by the following :
Control Panel -Classic view -Mouse - at the top, choose Hardware. One at
a time, highlight " Dell touchpad "and " Hid-compliant mouse "and see
what the Device Properties said below. Did it say "working properly" ?
If not, go back to Mouse properties window and check the touchpad
settings and pointer options, make sure appropriate boxes are checked.
That's all I know.

Hello, Saseve. I knew you and Rowdy have different problems. I still
have trouble imagining your issue, but I'm glad you have it resolved -
by yourself.

Default USB Mouse non-functional after recent Vista update

It appears the people above are correct on the problem occuring after the update. The update was from 04-12-08. If you can boot to last known configuration, do so and then immediately go into Control Panel\Windows Updates and turn off automatic updates. For those of us unfortunate enough to not have this as an option (last known configuration doesn't solve the problem), I am clueless as to how to fix this. I've been working on Windows since version 2.5 and never have been this frustrated over an issue. I removed the USB controller and root hubs from device manager. Uninstalled and reinstalled intellimouse software and even tried mice from 3 different brands hoping that it was a specific driver issued instead of a generic HID device driver. None of these things have worked. Has anybody made any progress on this issues?
Thanks!
