Default vista office and HP scanner/printer/fax problem

I just installed a new computer with Vista Office and my HP 6110 officejet
all-in-one which was working fine with XP prints from the computer, copies
from the glass bed and faxes. BUT, it will NOT scan. When I push on the
scan button it starts and makes noise like it is going to start. When I go
to devices on the control panel it says the 6100 is working. HP no longer
offers help on this machine. I have unplugged everything and did it again,
all to no avail. Any advice more than welcome, and appreciated.

Have you tried scanning from an application, such as something HP
supplies with the AIO? For some scanners I have seen specific warnings
that the buttons do not work under VISTA but the scanner does from
scanning utilities or applications.

Try that and report back on what happens.

I also have a HP 6110.
HP didn't make an upgrade to the HP Director software for this AIO and
Vista.
And since Home Premium doesn't have Fax & Scan software, I purchased VueScan
for my scanning needs.
However, I have to initiate the scanning from the software, as the button on
the AIO does nothing.
Without HP Director, the scanner can't start the software.

Default vista office and HP scanner/printer/fax problem

The same thing happened to me in 2004(?) with an $850 Brother AIO when I
upgraded a Win 95 PC to Win XP.
I had to buy another AIO... HP6110 for $450. I swore I would never buy
another Brother product!

Last year, I purchased a new Acer (Vista Home Premium) PC: Q6600, 500 Gig
HD, 3Gig RAM. Plus I bought a external 500 GIG USB HD for backups. Now I am
again suffering the same problem, but worse... my Microsoft Office 2000 won't
load either, so I'm now using free software... StarOffice. I may also boycott
HP!

I was thinking that it might be possible to load my external HD with my full
version XP and Office 2000 software. Does anyone know if this will then work
as a dual boot PC? (I am obviously not a PC guru.)

From reading Kim Komando, I see that I can't make a virtual XP machine using
Vista Home Premium, so if I can't make a dual boot PC I guess I could revert
to XP. But I am not sure how to guarantee that I have a useful legitimate
copy of my pre loaded Vista to use down the road.

So, if all else fails, I guess I may have to do what Dave did and get
scanning software. But i don't know if it has word processing ability... scan
a document then create a document that can be changed/modified?

VirtualPC will run in Vista HP. Alos consider VirtualBox - XP works fine
there also. I just loaded Mandriva Spring 2008 in VirtualBox running in
XP. I have run VirtualBox with 32 and 64 bit Vista versions with no
problem.

-- Huwyngr...thanks for the suggestion. I downloaded the driver from the HP
site so it would work with my 4 year old 6110 and everything works but the
scanner. Is that what you mean by a utilitiy or application?
Sorry but I am not too tech savvy. It is almsot easier to buy a new
printer, except frustrating that it worked the day before I got the new
computer with Vista Office.

Try the scanner and camera applet in Vista Control Panel. If the scanner
is not seen, you could try Vuescan (google it) to see if it supports
your built in scanner.
I suggested the VirtualBox software as an alternative to VirtualPC. I
believe a reply to your post wanted to load up XP in a Virtual machine.
and see if he could install the printer as a USB device in that virtual
machine. Never tried it but don't see why it would not work.

bjr,
Are you sure that VirtualPC will work with Vista Home Premium. I went to
download it, and the Microsoft requirements do not indicate that it will work
with VistaHP it says:
Virtual PC 2007 runs on: Windows Vistaâ„¢ Business; Windows Vistaâ„¢ Enterprise;
Windows Vistaâ„¢ Ultimate; Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows
Server 2003, Standard x64 Edition; Windows XP Professional; Windows XP
Professional x64 Edition; or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. Have you actually
done it?
