Hi, I have connected my Vista Laptop to my PC by ethernet cable and it does not allow me to view my shared folders on the XP machine. When viewing the network from the control panel the XP PC is listed but I get an error if I try to look at the files. I get an error message saying MPFP Packet Inbound Filter plus the message also says it has tried to ping the machine but it is not responding. I am currently running McAfee security centre as my firewall. Can anybody help to solve this problem. Thanks ![]() -- MikeG |

Your standard Ethernet Cable is a Cat5 Patch Cable, which we use for hooking
comps to routers, etc. The way you are hooking up the 2 comps, you need a Cat5 Ethernet Crossover Cable. Also, below might help you re proper Networking. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing. Permissions/Share info is there as well. If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall .(LAN allowed) 1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is the SAME. In Vista Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers) Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc) File Sharing: ON Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared Docs) Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames, and passwords (they can be different) on ALL computers in your Network). If you have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista Computer. Also, If you haven’t done so already, run XP’s Network Setup Wizard (in Start All Programs Accessories Communications), and tell the Wizard to enable File and Printer Sharing. Or Start Control Panel Network Connections Set up a Home or Small Office Network. -- Mick Murphy - Qld - Australia "MikeG" wrote: Hi, I have connected my Vista Laptop to my PC by ethernet cable and it does not allow me to view my shared folders on the XP machine. Acctually for your vista and xp machines to comunicate you would need to download LLTD ( Link layer topology discovery ) from the microsoft website. -- Erick |

No you don't.
You can run the XP Home and small business wizard; that does it for file and printer sharing! -- Mick Murphy - Qld - Australia "Erick" wrote: Acctually for your vista and xp machines to comunicate you would need to download LLTD ( Link layer topology discovery ) from the microsoft website. -- Erick |

Hi, I managed to get the PC to communicate but only one way. I can get the XP to talk to the Vista machine but not the other way round. I managed to copy files from the XP to Vista with no real hitches. However, when in vista and trying to open up the shared view of the XP PC I get unable to communicate. Error message says tried to ping IP Address but got no response. -- MikeG |
