Hi Chucker,
These are common questions and we've answered them in our FAQ at http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/pag...enter-faq.aspx. When you run defrag manually, it is designed so that it won't interfere with whatever you're doing on the computer. In other words, you don't have to go away while defrag runs--you can continue using the computer. If you let the scheduled defrag run (which runs only when you're not using the computer), you don't need to run defrag manually unless you want to. The goal for Vista was to make defrag more like a service that runs in the background. -- This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Ahh,
Kidding aside, MSFT has taken that functionality out of the GUI. You can use 3rd party defrag apps that work in Vista. Raxco Perfect Disc ?? is one. O&O defrag is one; etc. Just google for vista compatable defrag programs. MSFT believes;through their" analysis" that most people don't use that feature. So-POOF- it's gone. And as I alluded to, the only operating systems I know that obsess over defragger progress so much are all the other Microsoft OSes out there. I honestly don't see the difference between watching a progress bar that you know is telling you a lie and watching a movie or reading a book, other than the fact that you might feel more relaxed or like you've accomplished something if you opt for one of the latter choices. Or attend a political rally. It'll be much the same in the sense you know someone will be telling you a pack of lies, or if you're very lucky, half-truths. But at a political rally you might hear a couple of good jokes and meet some interesting people. |
