I have 5 computers networked - 2 Vistas and 3 XP's. The Vistas network well
with the XP's (and each other) , but the XP's get an error message when I try to access files on the Vistas. The XP's network well with each other as usual. Is there anything I need to do (a patch maybe?) that allows XP to access Vista files? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated Brian Ford |

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing. Permissions/Share info is there as well. If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall .(LAN allowed) 1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is the SAME. In Vista Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers) Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc) File Sharing: ON Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared Docs) Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames, and passwords (they can be different) on ALL computers in your Network). If you have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista Computer. Also, If you haven’t done so already, run XP’s Network Setup Wizard (in Start All Programs Accessories Communications), and tell the Wizard to enable File and Printer Sharing. Or Start Control Panel Network Connections Set up a Home or Small Office Network. -- Mick Murphy - Qld - Australia "brianford" wrote: I have 5 computers networked - 2 Vistas and 3 XP's. Hi Mick - thanks
I have seen all of this on other replies - checked all the steps. The Vista computers are clearly set up correctly as they network and share with each other without problems. They also access the XP computers. All XP computers access each other without trouble. The only issue is the XP computers can't access the Vistas. Is there something in the Vistas that blocks XP? This is probably a stupid thought that has nothing to do with your problem
but how are your file systems set up. Could it be that it's not a networking problem per say? How are your file systems set on the computers. By default I think that Vista uses the NTFS file system and can read and write to NTFS and the old FAT system used by XP. XP by default I think uses FAT and cannot see into NTFS. If this is the case, the Vista machines would be able to read/write to all of the pc's whereas the XP systems could only read/write to each other. If this is the case, I think there is a program on XP, I think possible under System Tools that allows you to convert your file system from FAT to NFTS. Just a rambling thought. Hello
I had the same problem, I have 3 computers, two running Windows XP and one running windows Vista. In the computers running windows Vista I was able to see and access the other two computers, the computers running XP can see the computer running Vista but they can not access the share folders. I received a permission error message. The problem was Windows Vista has different level of security for the different users of the network and the files I wanted to share have only permissions for the users in the computer with windows Vista. If you go to my computer, then users, and then select for example public, you can check the properties and then select the tab security. You will see all the users with rights of access that folder, for example everybody, administrator, owner, etc. And everyone has rights like read, list, modify, etc If you go to the folder that you want to share (It is suppose the folder is already shared) and you check the properties then security you MUST see the users in the computers running XP, in my case is EVERYBODY. I choose everybody because I am using a private home network with security and I am the only person that uses that network but if you are using a public or corporate network, it is suppose that you assign users or groups and you give different levels of security, different rights, different passwords, etc. The bottom line, choose a folder for share, share that folder, then go to properties, security, right down EVERYBODY choose the rights you want the users have like read or modify. Finally see if you have access to that folder from windows XP. If that work you can do the same with any folder you want. Remember if more than one person will access the data, instead of everybody you must configure the name of the users and assign the permissions and rights. This work for me I hope it work for you too. Bye "Chuck [MVP]" wrote: On Fri, 25 Apr 2008 23:32:00 -0700, brianford wrote: I have 5 computers networked - 2 Vistas and 3 XP's. Hi Michael - thanks for the suggestion. XP's use NTFS already. Appreciate the
thought. Brian "Rev. Michael L. Burns" wrote: This is probably a stupid thought that has nothing to do with your problem but how are your file systems set up. Hi Cesar - thanks for the tip here. I had everything (it seems) set up
correctly. I had included the name of the XP computer and shared with that. All security options were set correctly. It didn't seem to want to work. I tried the EVERYBODY option as you did and again shared - this worked for some reason. I have no idea why - it just did. I can't figure out why this same set up wouldn't work for the specific computer name I chose to share with. Weird. So not a terribly convincing explanation but it's fixed. Thanks again for your help. Also Chuck and Mick for suggestions. Brian "Cesar Balladares" wrote: Hello I had the same problem, I have 3 computers, two running Windows XP and one running windows Vista. I glad that it work for you too and you are rigth it is weird. I am not sure
if this is a "bug" of windows Vista or maybe they are trying to make Windows Vista more secure, I meant now you must share the computer and ALSO you must especify the name of the user accesing such computer(or put everybody and anybody will have access from that computer).
