Default Screen freezes when using Nvidia 174.74 driver for 9800 GX2 video

Hi all,
I've already submitted a support ticket on this to Nvidia, who is currently
saying it is not their fault. I am using Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit SP1,
on a Intel 9770 chip, 4 gigabytes of Patriot RAM, 4 Raptors in RAID0 mode,
and my video card is the EVGA Nvidia 9800 GX2 (he
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814130338 ).

The problem: When using my computer for browsing the net with Opera 9.27 or
Firefox 2.0.0.14 or using Second Life (http://secondlife.com), the screen
will either 1) flicker in a strobe-like fashion for a few seconds and then
freeze up; or 2) do exactly like #1 and then go black. It does this with
Windows XP SP3 too, by the way.

They have told me to make sure to uninstall the 174.74 driver completely and
cleanly (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvist...4.74_whql.html) and to
use the Guru3d.com driver cleaner. I have done this with this driver, as well
as the 174.53 driver. Both drivers do not work with my rig.

The ONLY driver that works for maybe an hour or so, before freezing up, is
the Guru3d.com 174.93 driver. I've even tried the latest beta 175.12, and it
freezes up also.

What do I do now ? I will continue to pursue my Nvidia support ticket.
Thanks for your time.

Steve

I have the same problem with Vista Home Premium 32 bit SP1 and my 8500GT
card when watching TV or DVDs with Media Center. I had to go back to 169.25
from either 174.74 or from 175.12. I never heard back from NVIDIA when I
reported it. I however, do not have a problem with other PC applications or
with Web browsing.
