Default Can't access shared database on xp computer using my Vista laptop

My dad has set up a music database on his xp desktop comupter and all
of the other computers in the house can connect to it (all running
xp). My Vista laptop can't because I'm on my school domain (not the
local network). If I change the workgroup I lose my username (allready
tried it once). Is their any way to access the share without changing
the workgroup? The IT guy at my school says I should be able to
connect using the ip address, but I have no idea how to get the window
to type it into.

also I connected to the printer on the network earlier this year (when
I was also running vista) using the ip address and it worked fine.
