Default Finally able to see XP computer after SP1 3rd boot, but never again

After months of diddling in an effort to access shared files on my XP
computer from my Vista computer I was finally able to access the files using
Windows Explorer after the final reboot after installing SP1. My glee was
short lived however because after turning my Vista computer off and then on
again I still cannot access the shared files on my XP computer. I can see
the XP computer in "Network and Sharing Center" "View Full Map", but I
can't view the shared files by double clicking on the XP computer icon.

Network discovery - on

Public folder sharing - on
Printer sharing - on

Workgroup is WORKGROUP on both computers

I am able to access a shared printer on the XP computer

I am able to access the shared files on my XP computer by using Internet
Explorer and entering \\Computername in the address bar.

I am able to access a NAS drive on my network using Windows Explorer.

Can you see the shared folders if using net view \\xpipaddress on Vista?

Yes, I can see the shared folders using net view \\xpipaddress and net view
\\xpcomputername . BTW I've since discovered that i can manually map a
shared folder to a drive from Windows Explorer or by using net use at a
command prompt. I believe that this is a broken Vista "network browse"
function.

Walla!

I used some of the information that you provided and downloaded
browstat.exe. Browstat reveiled that my Simpletech NAS is assuming the role
of browse master. If I remove the NAS from the LAN then my Vista PC becomes
browse master and then I can see the shared files on my XP PC. The
Simpletech NAS runs imbedded LINUX. Strange though, Windows XP is perfectly
happy and compatable with the NAS being browse master. Simpletech has no
answers on their web site. I have a query in with their tech support.

Is there a way that I can force the Vista PC to be the browse master in the
meantime?

Lenny does your xp happen to be a laptop?

I had the exact same problem when networking the new vista to the XP
laptop...I after days of fiddling around could not understand whythe
network worked fine until I discovered that the ThinkPad laptop had a
setting to turn off networking after each reboot. Apparently it was a
security measure. The IBM thinkpad had a factory installed utility
called ThinkVantage...in there, tucked away was the setting to toggle
this security feature on or off
