No sound with AC'97 Audio
Hello,
I have intalled Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit on my Gateway laptop but I can't get any sound. My CPU is AMD Turion 64 and Motherboard chipset is ATI Radeon Xpress 200M. The integrated sound controller is ATI SB400 AC'97. I have installed the latest Realtek AC'97 audio codec Vista driver from he http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...tDown=false#AC but I get a "This device cannot start (Code 10) in the Device Manager Sound properties. Has anyone had a similar problem and got it to work? Thanks a lot. |

Do you have the right drivers? Is your chip HD? There are
HD drivers at: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false andypb123 wrote: Hello, I have intalled Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit on my Gateway laptop but I can't get any sound. Thanks I tried the HD drivers but it made no difference. I dont think my
sound chip is HD. I'm pretty sure the AC'97 audio codec Vista driver is the right driver. "Theo" wrote: Do you have the right drivers? Is your chip HD? Although you don't provide a model number, you may not have
RealTek sound. Other laptops using that ATI SB400 indicate it's a Conexant AC97. You really need to find out exactly your hardware is to search for the correct drivers. andypb123 wrote: Thanks I tried the HD drivers but it made no difference. I dont think my sound chip is HD. The model number of my Gateway laptop is MX6440.
I ran Everest on it and under Multimedia it came up with: Windows Audio - Device: midi-out.0 PCI/Pnp Audio - Device: ATI SB400 AC'97 Audio Controller If that helps any? Thanks a lot Andy "Theo" wrote: Although you don't provide a model number, you may not have RealTek sound. Other laptops using that ATI SB400 indicate it's a Conexant AC97. Realtek AC'97 has always installed and worked fine on all of my builds of

I agree with you, but I'm not sure the OPs laptop has a
Realtek chip. Google search for ATI SB400 AC'97 seem to indicate the chip is a Conextant(?) sound chip. John Barnett MVP wrote: Realtek AC'97 has always installed and worked fine on all of my builds of Vista. |

If that is the case then i suggest he visits his laptop manufacturer's
website to see if an improved driver is available. -- John Barnett MVP Associate Expert http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org http://vistasupport.mvps.org The information in this mail/post is supplied "as is".
