Dear NG,
I have a small LAN with a Vista desktop (called Osiris) and a few XP laptops (one of which is called Snowdancer. Last week I did a "clean" install of Vista on Osiris. Before this clean install I had two way communications between Snowdancer and Osiris. I use Windows Explorer to move files between the two. After the clean install Osiris could still manipulate files on Snowdancer, but the reverse is not happening. BTW, print sharing works and so does "Public Folders." From this I conclude that I do not have a connection issue, right? I do not have a Domain. My C: drive is "Shared." I log into Snowdancer with my full name Robert Schuldenfrei and a password. I log into Osiris with my nickname Bob and no password. I am an administrator on both systems. I have searched through this NG for similar problems and there are lots of posts. I have come up short with every repair I have looked into, so I must be missing something. Remember, before my clean install I had this working just fine. TIA, Bob |

If this is the only way I will do it. So, is a password on Vista necessary?
Before my clean install and without SP1 I did not need a password. Is this something new? I am in a very secure setting. The only reason I have a password on Snowdancer, the laptop is because it "travels." Thanks, Bob "Robert L. Thanks, Bob Bob, There is a system policy that can be set on or off, which requires a password for networked file sharing, if you're using non-anonymous authentication. Windows XP had it, and Vista has it. You should make the setting consistent in your network, for best results. http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Synchronise http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005...ml#Synchronise -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP 2005-2007 [Windows - Networking] http://networking.nitecruzr.net/ |

Hi Robert & Chuck,
It is only getting worse . I took the advise for setting up a password, but I did it on the Guest account, not wanting to use a password when I signed into Osiris. I may have done a few other things too, but I did not write them down. My bad! When I tried to see the files on Osiris from Snowdancer I still failed and now I have lost the ability to print from Snowdancer on the printer that is attached to Osiris. I really need a step-by-step procedure to follow. At each step I need a test I can execute to confirm that I have performed the test correctly. TIA, Bob "Robert L. (MS-MVP)" wrote in message ... Look at logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. I was about to plow into your very excellent notes when I decided to add password protection to User: Bob. That did it. File and Printer Sharing now working 100%. I will read about auto-login later this morning. I would rather not have to type in my password on Osiris if I do not have to, but will if I must. As part of my learning experience (at 65 years old I am still learning) I am going to read and experiment with "layered" network testing. Browstat.exe has been downloaded and installed. Chuck, I will work my way through all of your articles. I really want to understand this technology as I support many other users. Thank you very much for your help, Cheers, Bob All right, Bob! Glad we got you going in the right direction. Thanks for the feedback. -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP 2005-2007 [Windows - Networking] http://networking.nitecruzr.net/ |
