Default Service Pack 1 and automatic update

I have two computers running Vista Home Premium. When Service Pack 1 came
out, my desktop, which is a clone I built myself, downloaded and installed
Service Pack 1 without any problem, but my Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop seems
oblivious to Service Pack 1's existence. Although automatic update is on both
computers with similar settings (full automatic update), and the laptop has
downloaded a number of updates since then and keeps telling me the computer
is up to date, I can't help wondering why Service Pack 1 hasn't downloaded
and installed, and whether I should install it manually or just assume the
computer has a good reason to not install it and leave it alone. Any input on
this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Check Dell site, specific to your Tag# for any driver updates
If the sp is unavilable, that generally means something on your PC is not
compatible

In order to get an accurate picture of absolutely everything to do with your
computer, I suggest downloading Belarc Advisor (www.belarc.com). You will
then definitely know if SP1 has been installed or not.

As an update, I am guessing this has since changed, because I found
last night that after all appropriate updates to vista and drivers
Windows Update will download SP1 once it feels the system is ready.

Yeah, as suggested, I downloaded from the microsoft site, then ran
it..!
It appeared that nothin was happening. So double clicked the Icon
again - asking for permission, then SP1 Installer is already
running..!

So why doesn't it show a progress hint/bar/ %done/ Failure / Error or
something..?
When'd ya know its finished. then re-started, went into windows
update...
it said - Important update: Vista SP1 - click to download.
what a joke, 444Mb to DL again.
I Just let it do it, and 4hrs later its downloaded and installed..
Well I don't notice any difference..!

There are at least 3 areas that show the difference, PROVIDED you did have
SP1 installed successfully.
1. ) Restore points. Go to system restore and you will find out that all
your restore points PRIOR to SP1 are gone.
2. ) Start menu Computer System Properties tab under Windows edition,
it says Service Pack 1.
3. ) Start menu Computer you'll see your C: drive has more GB than you
had before SP 1.
