I have been trying to set up a VPN connection to our SBS2k3 server from
Vista Business pc. At first I was getting error 741 and found KB929857 which refers to this error. I used method 2. Now when I try to connect I either get error 800 or " 'server' is not set up to accept a connection to port 'pptp' from this computer" No errors are logged in applics or system logs at either end. VPN connections from my XPpro box work fine so the second error is false. Can anyone help? (crosspost to both microsoft.public.windows.vista.networking_sharing and microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs) |

hi Alan C, I had this same problem w while ago well it was the authinication problem. You can check on your VPN properties, go to the security tab in that select the Advance radio button. then select settings under allow thses protocols tick all of them. and say yes. this should allow you to connect to the VPN server. if it fails please provide more infromation about ur sbs server. note :- by doing the above ur security will be lessened. so make sure you got the right authintication protocol configured Hope this helps .. I've tried that, (and all the other options) with no success. Interestingly
since trying ms chap v2 only, I'm now just getting error 800. I've also checked the RAS config on the server and all encryption levels are accepted. As there are no KB hits for VPN error 800 on Vista, I'm going demented trying to get it to work. HI Alan C, what are you connecting internet through. if your connecting internet through a router make sure L2TP traffic can passthrough. Also on your windows Vista firewall make a rule to allow vpn traffic to passthrough. that if your using windows Firwall. if your usinga 3rd party firewall make sure you configure that as well. Did you try connecting with another OS. Hope this Helps Cheers !! -- john_cena -Shihan Sylvester Pietersz- -(MCP,MCSA,MCSE+Security,MCSE+Messeging- -MCTS,MCITP)- -Systems -::-Engineer / Consultant Trainer- :: |

Hi Are you using the correct VPN server name? The server administrator provides this name. Is the Internet / network connection to the server functioning properly? You should '_ping_' (http://compnetworking.about.com/libr...bldef-ping.htm) the server if not sure. Is your '_network_firewall_' (http://compnetworking.about.com/od/f...f_firewall.htm) blocking VPN connections? Port 1723 must be opened and Protocol 47 must be enabled in the firewall configuration settings Does the server have too many clients already connected (VPN server connection limit exceeded)? The server administrator can check this, but it is not a common problem Also make sure PPTP is enabled on your VPN Connection. and router. One thing I can tell you about Vista - if you're using OneCare, the OneCare firewall blocks outbound VPN by default. You need to enable it in the advanced settings. I'm not sure about the built-in Vista firewall - that may be the case with that one as well. also are you running microsoft virtual PC 2007, if so uninstall it and then try becasue vp2007 sometimes cause problems with PPTP Hope this helps Cheers !! -- john_cena -Shihan Sylvester Pietersz- -(MCP,MCSA,MCSE+Security,MCSE+Messeging- -MCTS,MCITP)- -Systems -::-Engineer / Consultant Trainer- :: |
