Vista Home Premium 32 bit, What can I do to make this thing run faster. I
have 4 gig of RAM, high end video card, AMD Athlon 64 processor 3500+ 2.2 GHz
and this thing side by side with my XP machine 1 gig of RAM AMD processor 1.8
and my XP machine wipes the floor in every application. High speed internet
connection and no shortage of service. I maintain a network for a living and
all the machines are XP. My kids don't even want to use the Vista machine
because this thing is such a dog when it comes to doing anything. Even high
end games run better on the XP. I purchased Vista to get a good start on
getting it to network and working out issues. I'm not recommending it to
anyone since it runs so slow. Am I alone in this observation or have I not
figured how to make this thing work faster.

I cannot comment on games since I dont have any on my Vista or Winxp PC's
Using general Office apps on either sys I notice little difference and my
Vista PC is a lower spec than yours (onboard vid, 2gb ram)
If you purchased from a large OEM, eg Dell/HP etc have you removed all the
crap that they preinstall & loads on startup?

If you are using Norton, Trend micro or McAfee, it will be a 1/3 slower

I personally think Vista is a dog so I'm not going to waste a lot of time on
it. I'd look at what security software you have installed, and consider the
search service as (very) general pointers for common system performance
issues.

But really, if you "maintain a network for a living" you should surely know
better than to post "runs so slow". What exactly do you mean by that? How
are you testing it? What have you tried already?

Is the windows performance index scores indicative of a problem with a
particular component? You're running Vista on an old processor, over 4 years
old (in terms of when it was first available even if you purchased your
particular one yesterday), and this _is_ going to limit performance. What
sort of performance would you expect running, say, Windows XP on a computer
with components that were 3 or 4 years old when XP was first released? Vista
really is designed for newer hardware, multi-core processors, etc, and
running with an old processor points to older, slower motherboard and RAM
type as well as the processor.
