Your use of "low level" is what's causing the confusion. You won't
find that terminology at any disk manufactur's site. What you WILL
find is something like "diagnostic" testing or testers.

"low level" has traditionally been coupled with "format" by anyone
familiar with hard drive work.

Check the manufacturer of your hard drive's web site....some companies
provide a low-level test program you can download.

I think that your disk is probably damaged …cannot guess any other
reason for failure.There may be some problem in the controllers or can
be another thing.The best way is to get a professional team that can
recover data from 'damaged drives' (http://www.diskemergency.com/) .
They can be your best resort as they have tools and ways to get the
things done.

The software is more like $250 US. The service is another matter. But I
agree, OnTrack is best short of a custom service.

On-Track is the best at data recovery. It can be $1000+. I would try
putting the drive in another computer as a slave. See if you can access
the data. Don't low level test it. It can delete data if you don't
know how to do it non-destructive. I would try error checking the drive
or see if Acronis can image the files to a new drive.
