Here is my problem. I have three computers on my home network.
1x Vista Business SP1, Ethernet connection to a DGL-4300 router, UAC turned off (AVG 8.0 Suite w/Link Check turned off) 1x Vista Home Premium SP1, Ethernet connection to a DGL-4300 router, UAC active (Norton 360 v1) 1x XP Home SP3, Ethernet connection to a DGL-4300 router (AVAST). Note: This box also dual boots into Ubuntu 8.04 (Linux "Hardy"). 1x NETGEAR PS101v1 print server connected to the parallel port of a Samsung SCX-4100 (print only. Scanning is through the USB port) The XP machine can find and print to the network printer. Neither of the Vista machines can successfully accept the printer/server. They find the printer, but I get an error message: Printers Add Printer Add a network printer (finds) PP1 on SCX-4100 Next "Connecting to PP1 on Scx-4100" ERROR: "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Make sure that you have typed the name correctly, and that the printer is connected to the network". The only way I can get the Vista Home Premium box to print is to configure it to print via the VISTA Business computer. The latter is connected to the USB port of the printer. I tried deleting the printer and reconfiguring it via the XP computer as it is the only one that can talk to the print server. No matter how I try, I get "ScanServer MFC Application has stopped working" message when I try to start the server application from any of the two Vista boxes. What am I missing? Print services, user rights? I read about AVG but both Vista machines are using different packages. ______________________ The Traveller Carlsbad, California |

Just a quick follow-up. I managed to get the printers to work. I had
to reinstall the NETGEAR printer and server applications on each Vista computer then select a LOCAL printer as an IP printer. It refuses to work if I try to access it as a LAN printer but it does work through the LAN when I select a local IP printer... go figure. It was so simple in XP. Note -- I can only manage the print server via the XP computer. In the meantime, I can see the status by entering http://198.168.0.xxx (print server address) and the status comes-up. ______________________ The Traveller Carlsbad, California |
