I just got a new laptop that is running Vista Home Premium 32bit. I have an old desktop that is running XP Service Pack 2. I want to move some files off of the desktop onto my laptop using an Ethernet cable, which I already have. I don't want to use wireless and I don't intend to connect the two to the Internet. I just want to move files. Can someone please explain to me how I can set up a network between the two of them? Thanks. -- Victory-Starr |

You can use a cross over cable between two computers. If they are capable of 1 Gbps, get a CAT 6 cross over. Cross over cable is not a patch cable. You can use a router and patch cables. Same workgroup for both computers Same user account on both computers with same password Same subnet 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 using 255.255.255.0. If you are using a cross over cable, the gateway is same address. If a router, its the router's address. You need to set up a share in Windows for each drive you want to see. Use the account above for rights. Disable firewall and anti-virus. My Network Places can see the other computer. Just copy and paste. Don't move. Takes longer and you can't compare file count and size at the end. -- SCSIraidGURU Michael A. You can google workgroup networking or home networking. Many sites have step by step directions. -- SCSIraidGURU Michael A.
