Vista RTM version 6.0 build 6000:
Since a couple of days when I open Windows Explorer I see that the traditional “File | Edit | Tools | Help” toolbar has reappeared. No matter what I do, I cannot get rid of it! I’m aware that pressing the Alt tab toggles that toolbar. But toggling it has no longer any effect on it. Equally, checking/unchecking “always show menus” in Folder Options | View has no effect regardless whether I restart or not. I’ve tried resetting Windows Explorer to its default view state, but that had no affect either. The “File | Edit | Tools | Help” toolbar doesn’t go away! I checked in the registry all values for “alwaysshowmenus”, and all are set to 0 (decimal & hexadecimal) – checked and default states. In Windows Explorer itself, under Organize | Layout is an option to check or uncheck “Menu Bar” which also no longer has an effect on the “File | Edit | Tools | Help” toolbar. Can anyone suggest another way to get rid of it and re-enable the Tab toggle? Are there any scripts out there? FYI, so far this has only happened in Windows Explorer and not in Internet Explorer. But I do would like to get rid of it from Windows Explorer – it sort of ruins the whole look of it and blank its appearance breaks up the integrated theme. Shame really! All help would be much appreciated. |

All help would be much appreciated. Regarding my issue mentioned above, I just noticed a rather odd behaviour: Every time I uncheck in Folder Options | View ‘Always show menus’ then click on Apply and OK, then reopen Folder Options | View, the ‘Always show menus’ option is checked again. It’s like something always forces this option to be checked. It makes no difference if I have any other window open or not, or if the relevant “alwaysshowmenus” registry keys are set to 0. Even though these are set to 0, the ‘Always show menus’ option is forced checked again in Folder Options | View. And yes, this setting controls whether the traditional toolbar is shown or not, just like the Alt toggle. Very strange! All help and advice would be much appreciated to resolve this nagging issue. |

Hello Qbailey, You might see if Method Four in this tutorial will allow you to turn the Menu Bar on or off. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/92073-menu-bar.html Hope this helps, Shawn -- Brink *There are no dumb questions, just the people that do not ask them.* '*Windows 7 Forums*' (http://www.sevenforums.com/) *and* '*::Vista Forums::*' (http://www.vistax64.com) *Please post feedback to help others.* |

Thanks for your quick reply, I tried method 4 but unfortunately it didn't work. I should have checked the program's homepage first because the answer was at the bottom of their own FAQ. This below reg key seems to be another place that controls the menu bar which might come in handy for anyone who reads this thread. 'QuizoApps: FAQ' (http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/faq) I uninstalled QTTabBar. But menu bar won't hide! ( Vista ) Did you try to uncheck "Folder Options" - "Always show menu"? There seems to be a bug on Vista explorer. I got some reports that deleting a registry value solves this problem. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\ShellBrowser] "ITBar7Layout" The value will be recreated. ( If you edit registry keys and values, please do it at your own risk. ) -- qbailey |
