Default cd/dvd rom

In the last few days my disc drive only recognizes DVD discs. It will not
play or do anything with CD discs.
I have un-istalled and re-installed. Restarted the PC at a restore point.
Still the same.
I am running Vista Home premium with a NEC CD/DVD+-RW ND-3350A ATA Device.

The optical drive has two lasers in it, one for CD, one for DVD. So either
the laser for the CD side is extremely dirty, or it's failed. If you have a
disk cleaning kit, use it; if you don't, it amost cheaper to purchase a
whole new drive than a cleaning kit.

Thanks Cari, I thought that might be the case...but confirmation from someone
in the know makes me feel better....better go buy a new one. Cheers.
